Greenwood High School is filled with many unique teachers, who teach a variety of subjects and contribute in different ways to the school’s overall culture. One teacher many are familiar with is Ms. McGinty, who teaches English and Theatre and is one of the musical directors.
Ms. McGinty started her teaching career in Warren County around 15 years ago. She has taught at both Warren Central and Greenwood, and she has taught several subjects over that time. She mainly teaches English, but she has also taught journalism, creative writing, and theatre. She loves teaching older grades, and she became inspired to become a teacher when she watched the movie “Freedom Writers.” She loves teaching because she loves watching kids grow in life and become better readers and writers. Throughout her time at Greenwood, Ms. McGinty has helped with Student Council, KYA, and the musical.
Not only is Ms. McGinty very involved in extracurriculars, but she is known to be very involved in the classroom. One of her English students, Miles Goodrich, described how Ms. McGinty interacts well with students and builds valuable connections that make learning enjoyable. She often creates fun activities and lessons that make the content interesting. Goodrich said that one of his favorite memories was “playing pictionary in class.”
Not only is Ms. McGinty a great teacher, but she is very successful in her role as a musical director. She was not always interested in theatre, but she has a background in singing and ended up doing the musical her senior year of high school. She loved it, and she was even a theatre major until she decided to switch majors to become a teacher. Her love of theatre is evident, as she puts a lot of time and effort into the musical. As a director, she helps pick the musical, organize the kids, and many other important tasks to make sure the show runs smoothly.
This year, Greenwood performed “Into the Woods,” a musical that combines classic Grimm fairy tales to create a new story. Ms. McGinty said the directors picked this musical because they love the composer and they have a good group of kids that are a good fit to perform this show. Ms. McGinty said that their preparations for the show went well, and that they were well ahead of schedule compared to previous years.
Maggie Davis, who played Jack’s mother in the show, also felt good about the show. She mentioned how there is always some doubt during the process of preparing for the musical, but that she was confident it would come together into an amazing show. Davis also spoke highly of Ms. McGinty, saying how she “is a really good director who makes great critiques.” She explained how she is very encouraging and helps people be less shy, which is really helpful in something performance-based like theatre.
Overall, Ms. McGinty is very involved in our school’s community, and her English and theatre students seem to love her teaching style. She is also very successful as a musical director, and the members of the musical speak highly of her and how she contributes to the show.
