Computer Science (CS) is a major many people in college take. It is the study of computers used to solve complex problems using coding, algorithms, and more. People have questioned if this major will become irrelevant in the future because of AI but is that true? At Greenwood High School, the class is taught by Mr. Corder, so I decided to ask him about what computer science is, and how he teaches it.
What is CS in Mr. Corder’s Terms?
In Mr. Corder’s terms, he said that CS is “understanding how your computer interprets user information,” meaning how the computer processes our information when we put it into the computer to code or anything else. Next, when asked about the most important subjects for CS in the future, he suggests taking digital literacy.
Teaching CS
For Mr. Corder, teaching CS can be fun but challenging at times. He was asked if there were any things that were complicated to teach students, and he replied saying, “It’s complicated to teach students any program because there’s more than one method to complete those tasks with, so it depends on the students’ thought process of learning it.” Freshman can act differently compared to other grades like seniors and juniors. He thought about this topic for a bit, but he muttered, “Freshmen come with their own challenges since they’re the youngest class, and the seniors get the senioritis of going to school, do my work, and go home, so it’s a combination of freshmen and seniors that are the hardest.”
CS in the Future
In the future, it is said by many that students should not take CS because of the relevance of AI. Whenever Mr. Corder was told this, he replied by saying, “Students should still take it because AI isn’t gonna fully take over. If there is someone programming the AI, then it would only match the programmer’s brain, and it cannot be smarter than us to fully take over the job.” Finally, I asked him why CS will be an important major for students in college and the future. He elaborated, “It opens a lot of career paths, and if you understand the basis of computer science and how computers work, then you can put that information into any career because there are computers everywhere.”
Conclusion
In conclusion, CS is still an important major, even with the addition of AI. If anyone is interested in computer science, you can talk to Mr. Corder, as it is a fun class to take.
