Greenwood annually hosts an incredible international festival, and it is such a great event. For most students and the staff, it is a special time when they can bring a part of their home to share with others. From features like varieties of foods to performances, it displays the art of many unique cultures. The festival is more than just a day; it is a chance for students to connect, break down stereotypes, take pride, and put aside their differences to come together as one. Students at GHS make this event possible.
One student in particular, who practices daily, talks about how she feels about the upcoming event. Anela Suzumu, a current international club member, is excited about being able to represent Micronesia and will be “doing fashion.” They have also been working on a traditional dance every day for weeks, showing dedication and pride to their country. Performing in front of tons of random people can be scary, but she has also been mentally preparing. She realizes she is doing this to “represent” and “doesn’t care if people have bad opinions.” Suzumu has been carefully selecting pieces for the fashion that deeply represents her island. Although she feels honoured to represent her country, she admits she is nervous. This is due to the fact that her team “wasn’t good with communicating.” She was disappointed when talking about how some people were too scared to speak up on the problems and just agreed with what others were saying to avoid any problems.
Many students from last year’s festival talked about how they learned more about other traditions and had many curiosities. This festival also helped open students’ eyes to the richness of many cultures. As the festival gets closer, there is a buzz of excitement throughout the school. While students are finalizing their performances, others wait in anticipation as cultures from around the world come to life.
