Immigrant Acknowledgement

Greenwood High School is an incredibly diverse school, full of people from all over the world. The students are very fortunate to be in a school such as this one, because of the many unique students. So many of them are very cool, but they have been undervalued in school and in the student body. They all have such interesting personalities and stories that are so engrossing. Asumani Masumbuko, one of the many new immigrants here at GHS, has an amazing story.

Asumani is from Tanzania and moved to Bowling Green in February of 2023. “Living in Africa was not easy. Moving to the U.S. was for good reasons.” Asumani said. “The United States has brought me and my family lots of opportunities, more than we had when we lived in Tanzania,” Masumbuko said, reminiscing. In Africa, education is very poor. Asumani added, “The school system was not good and you have to pay good money to even get the chance to learn.”

Having a job in Tanzania was very difficult as well, moreover finding and maintaining one. “Jobs in Africa were very hard to find and when found, you could not make lots of money, and it was difficult to keep the job as well,” Masumbuko said. According to statista.com, the poverty rate in Tanzania is 25.7%! Being in poverty means that you can not buy food, nice clothing or housing, and not be able to have an education because of most every school’s high tuition. As stated by scolasita.com, “Total school fees and supplies= $1,076!” Keep in mind, this is for the average public schooling.

His new life in the U.S. has been great for him, saying, “Nothing has been too tough and I have really been enjoying school while I’ve been here.” We, as a school, want to make sure that new kids from others countries feel safe and included here at Greenwood High School. Masumbuko says, “We need more support because it is tough moving from one country to another.”
