Homecoming! Who isn’t excited about your high school’s homecoming football game?
Here at Greenwood High School, homecoming consists of spirit week full of dress up days, followed by the homecoming football game at the end of the week. To switch things up a little, this year the Student Council decided to have a dance! After years of not having one, Greenwood will now be having a homecoming dance, but what do students think?
“I’m really excited for it, first year of high school and I get a homecoming dance,” says Makayla Autry. Similarly, freshman Eliza Lewis says she “thinks it’s exciting.” Responses such as these were common amongst our Greenwood students. “I think it’ll be fun, we need more events for sure,” was the response from sophomore Ella Brown. It’s clear that the dance announcement got lots of people excited, but for some it’s not any more intriguing than just another high school event. William Terry, another freshman, has thoughts on a dance that are more on the down low. He says he “doesn’t really care,” and most likely won’t be attending. Likewise, basketball player Brayden Kennedy doesn’t care very much, but says he will be participating.
The dance is being held on October 13, the same night as the football game. Along with the announcement itself, the scheduling of the dance has some opinions of its own. Majority of students don’t think having the homecoming dance held immediately after the game is a good idea. As said by most, everyone’s gonna be all sweaty. “I wish it was on Saturday and not right after the game,” says Maggie Stewart. Ella Brown wishes there be “a few hours in between,” so she can dress up and “not be hot.” Timing also greatly affects the athletes participating in the football game. Cheerleaders such as Makayla Autry and Tyler Wright say that with such a short amount of time, it’ll be hard to change out of their uniforms after performing. Junior, Brycen McCabe, brings up the fact of timing having a role on the attendee numbers. “I feel like that would ruin the amount of people that would show up (to both dance and game),” says Brycen. Despite the downsides, many people can agree it’s a reasonable decision. “I agree both ways,” sophomore Alfredo Mata adds onto the argument. “Right after – going to the dance, you’re sweaty, but it’s also fun because you’re relaxed from the game and now going to a dance.”
Nevertheless, having a homecoming dance is exciting. Everyone gets together, dances, and has fun. Still, this poses another debate, what to wear? The theme of the 2023 Homecoming Dance is Throwback. Because of the causality of the dance, some say they won’t be participating in the theme, and some say the theme just isn’t very practical. Whether you participate in a theme or not, make sure you come on down and enjoy the night. Reward yourself with a fun dance after cheering on our Gators!
