Each year, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet holds a Statewide Art competition that serves as an “opportunity to learn about the environment and educate students and families about the damage done by littering”, says Keith Buckhout, who works in the Office of Public Affairs. Three Greenwood Students placed in this year’s competition: Keiko Nishijima took home first place in the 15-18 age division, while Liz DeMarse and Jamie Stewart won second and third, respectively, in the 12-14 age division.

The contest received more than 1,500 entries in the 2016 contest this year. Each winning piece will be on display at the Transportation Center’s conference center in Frankfort. Buckhout says, “[The] KYTC (Kentucky Transportation Cabinet) uses the art that the students create to advertise the Adopt-a-Highway program…most importantly, we use the winning works of art to produce an Adopt-a-Highway calendar that we distribute across the state.”
