In 2009, Greenwood High School won the state final four. 2009 Greenwood High School won the region championship. In 2007, 2008, 2009, Greenwood High School won the district championship. 2025 that is the year we are going into. It has been 15 years since Greenwood High School has gone all the way and won big time. William Howard is this year’s coach, and has found players to make up his team, all freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Ryan Colter and Levi Wyatt are two juniors, and Romello Meade, Jackson Freeland, and Jaxson Howell are seniors. They all have had their highlight moments in the past, but will all five boys have their moment this year? Here’s what these boys have to say about the season so far.
Ryan Colter plays wide receiver, and is number 43. He quoted what he’s learned about teamwork while playing football is that “You have to work together in order to win, but also it’s like you got to put your differences aside to come together.” He said he’s been playing since he was a kid, around third grade and he doesn’t really remember what made him start but he just never stopped. He stated the challenges that impacts him most while playing was himself “You can get in your own head or your opponents can, your opponents can really distract you but it’s all about focusing.” He stated. He then said that he, personally, has done pretty good, “The team I feel like we, you know we’ve had a lot of teamwork and we’ve done a lot, we didn’t win last week but you know the team we’re strong and lets hope we can win some more.” He said about him and the team.
Levi Wyatt is the quarterback and is number 17. He stated what he believes makes him a good athlete was “Knowing what’s going on all around and the people around me.” He said what he believes to be one of his weaknesses and what he is doing to improve it is “Reading the defense sometimes and I can improve that by studying more on what they do.” He quoted the best piece of advice a coach had told him was this one time when his coach said “If you do something bad just forget about it and go on to the next play.” He said what he likes most about playing on the team is definitely the friends that he’s made and the family all around.
Romello Meade, plays wide receiver and he is number 14. He said after a good game he usually “Go out to eat with the team, probably like a waffle house or anything else close to the field.” He said the team he likes playing the best is “Probably this game Friday they’re like the top 10 in the state so I think we’ll do really pretty good. It’ll give us a challenge.” He said football helps him be a better student by “Howard, he gets on me with my grades and my attendance so I try to do better for him and myself.” He stated. He said “I think I’m doing alright. I haven’t really had time to have a spotlight yet, but it’s coming up.”
Jaxson Howell plays corner and he is number 8.” He said his major highlights and achievements in football were “Probably going to OT7 which is just a big 7 on 7, beating south warren my sophomore year, and being on the team in general just having accomplishments in football.” He said his pre-game routines usually goes like this, “We leave the school and go to chick-fil-a.” He then continued what he usually gets which was “A 12 piece grilled nugget meal with Starbucks’s strawberry acai lemonade, no berries, light ice.” Then he went on to say his post game routine usually is “The whole team after a win gets waffle house and then someone pays for it.” He said one important lesson you’ve learned from football was “Honestly just working as a team I mean that’s just as basic as it gets.” He stated. He said his relationship with his teammates and coaches are like “We all get on each others nerves from time to time, but we’re all a big family brothers fight, and dad, and son fight so I mean it’s just one big family.”
Jackson Freeland plays running back, linebacker, and punter and is number 26 . He said his teammates and coaches would describe him as probably a leader. He stated “I’m a talkative person and very helpful to other people.” He quoted as a team “I think that even with our losses we have strengths that we can get better and win.” He said how he manages school (homework) and football was “Usually after practice we go home and just do our homework. It won’t take long .” He said three things he likes about being on the team is “Being with friends, being athletic, and meeting new people.”
These boys don’t represent the whole team on what they think, but they do believe the team will get better through the season. They don’t think they’re doing too bad right now. We can see that all of these boys have a close relationship, they believe that they are all one big family. This relationship is important for the team which is why it is so great they have this trait. So whether you believe we will win big time this year or not, we can all agree that this team is having fun with people they are close with, and they will try their best to win as many games as they can.
