Repeal the 19th

By Emma Bessinger, Reporter

A revised electoral college showed that if the 19th amendment never existed, Donald Trump would have beat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. The news struck a nerve with Trump supporters, who began to voice “Repeal the 19th”

The 19th amendment was ratified in 1920 and is as states: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. “ To state the obvious, it gave white women the right to vote.

This riot sparked outrage on both sides, with Trump supporters stating “ women are too emotional.” and the opposing side saying “Why are we going back to the 1800’s” and calling it a sexist fantasy.

On twitter, the movement is backed mostly by Trump supports, or XY chromosome holders, but has also been backed by women, such as Kaitlyn Bennet (the Kentucky gun girl) where she claimed she’d rather have her right to vote revoked instead of her right to carry a firearm.

Not only with it on twitter, but on repeal.io as well, with the original author claiming:” We have to repeal the 19th Amendment in order to save our nation, our families, and our futures. It was one of the most catastrophically damaging pieces of legislation ever enacted to our lawbook.” This along with a piece of propaganda from the early 1900s, the page leads to another entitled “Why women voting was a mistake.”

I’ll save you the time of looking up the reasons behind repeal the 19th, and compile them here:

  1. It allows politicians to drive a wedge between men and women and pit husband and wife against one another.
  2. It is the most destructive thing for the family.
  3. It distributes the vote to individuals over families, which creates a system that will always sacrifice the family and always destroy family values in the name of pushing individual values

Right under the reasons why women shouldn’t vote is an article of how women shouldn’t work, this is not important to the article, I just found it interesting.

Now, this movement is outraging, but like strict gun laws, it will never pass without a majority vote. But what’s terrifying is the number of people who believe this nation would benefit by removing the rights of women, not just voting but rights in general. The saying “we don’t need feminism because no one wants to repress women in 2020” no longer stands true with the exposure of these patriarchal messages.
