The slow, melodic sound of “Gravity” by Sara Bareilles drifted out of the speakers. From the two far sidelines, we see two people (Savanna Brooks and Dylan Bankhead) gracefully walking towards the center of the field. The two stare at each other as if they had been in love for years. Girls scatter among the two leads in an elegant formation, dancing along to the lyrics. When the song finishes, the band begins.

The first to enter are the low brass, as they enter onto the field from the front side line in a dispersed pattern. They flutter into straight lines across multiple yard lines, then turn to face the crowd. A deep, captivating sound erupts from the depths of the band. The woodwinds and trumpets, who had previously been hidden behind props, came out from behind them in a heart formation. Suddenly, the drum line and pit make the beat grow faster. By the time the woodwinds arrive to their specific spots, the band began to speed up. When the first part hit its peak, the band finishes it with visuals that enticed the audience.

Within the second part, the band is in full swing. This once slow piece suddenly changed into a fast upbeat show. The theme of brisk movements and music continued into the band’s third part. The music matching right along as the band played pieces with a quick tempo.

In the end, the theme of the show (“Back to You”) is reiterated as the two soloists are brought back together to the center of the field. The band roars with the ending of the show, playing the melody of “Gravity.”

The marching band has been performing this show almost every Saturday for the past month, but on October 20, the band competed in Regional Quarterfinals in Hopkinsville.

The overall results of the band’s competition was nine out the ten bands that competed. This unfortunately means that the marching band season is over for the band. Though they may have been 1.8 points away from continuing on, many believe that this season was one that showed the improvement of the band as a whole.

McKenzie Eversoll, a third year clarinet marcher this year, says “I think that this year’s show was actually a fairly good show compared to some in the past. The music had good dynamic and emotion to it, that it added well to the story.” Another member of the band, Kaylee Copass, a girl in color guard girl added, “ The band did really good this year, we’ve accomplished lots and I’m proud of our hard work.”

The band is looking forward to their next show and will continue to work hard on making Greenwood’s Band the best it can be.
