The nine seniors on the Lady Gators soccer team stepped onto Greenwood’s home field for the last time for their game against University Heights Academy on Thursday, Sept. 27.

After celebrating Senior Night for both the girls and boys varsity team, Elise Fenno, Alexa Ketchem, Sydney Parson, Hallie Adams, Rachel Heltsley, Sarah Scott, Kylie Tisdale, Elizabeth Carter, Maddie McCorkle, Anna Haddock, and Elizabeth Demarse started the game in hopes of beating University Heights.

Within the first minute Greenwood’s Anna Haddock scored the first goal of the night off of an assist by Maddie McCorkle.

For the next four minutes Greenwood kept possession of the ball with two shots coming from Kylie Tisdale and Rachel Heltsley.

Greenwood added another goal in the fifth minute when Haddock played a ball across the penalty box and Hallie Adams finished it.

Two minutes later University Heights got on the scoreboard when one of their players took a shot outside of the penalty box. Greenwood’s goalie, Elizabeth Demarse, blocked the shot but University Heights was able to finish before Demarse could recover.

The Lady Gators continued to dominate the field with three shots from Heltsley, Adams, and Alexa Ketchem.

During the 17th minute University Heights earned a penalty kick after one of their players was fouled in the box. The shot slid past Greenwood’s goalkeeper resulting in the game being tied at 2-2.

The Lady Gators didn’t stop fighting though.

Junior Ellie Belcher scored a goal in the 23rd minute putting Greenwood ahead once again.

By the end of the first half Haddock had secured another goal for Greenwood and Demarse had made an incredible save.

Greenwood didn’t slow down during the second half.

Four minutes into the second half Haddock earned a well deserved hat trick when she scored her third goal of the night. Less than 15 minutes later she soared another one into the goal, basically guaranteeing the Lady Gators’ win over University Heights.

Adams added one last goal in the 69th minute after Ketchem, Belcher, and Annabelle Justice all took shots that were unfortunately saved by University Heights’ goalkeeper.

Rachel Heltsley, Sydney Parson, and Anne Logan Perkins each had an assist along with Anna Haddock and Maddie McCorkle contributing two assists each to help ensure the 7-2 win over University Heights.

Senior Night celebrated the nine seniors who have been playing Greenwood soccer for the last six years: Sydney Parson, Rachel Heltsley, Maddie McCorkle, Hallie Adams, Kylie Tisdale, Sarah Scott, Elise Fenno, Elizabeth Carter, and Alexa Ketchem.

Greenwood’s head coach Zach Salchli tweeted, “Thank you for building this program with me, for trusting me, for laughing with me, and at times crying with me. I will miss you all! Big things still left to achieve, let’s get it done!”

Greenwood plays three more regular season games against Ohio County High School, Henderson County High School, and Owensboro Catholic High School. The District 14 tournament will begin after fall break.
