Off-season preparation key to deer hunting

By Simon Veatch, Staff Writer

The off season is a very important key to your next hunting season.  There are a lot of things that need to be done, whether it’s putting corn out or cutting stray branches out of your view from your tree stand.  The deer like to know that there will be food in one spot at all times for them so they will keep coming back over and over.

One thing that many hunters do is put out corn, salt blocks, mineral blocks, apples, and acorns in the area they are hunting.  Also hunters use buck jam to sweeten the bait.  Hunters keep putting out corn and other bait over and over again to keep the deer coming.  It is important to keep your bait full and not stop putting it out because the deer may move on.

Another thing is a good game camera to capture the deer and other animals or people who might mess with your hunting area.  Maybe it is a person who is mad because they do not like you hunting, even though it is none of their business.  They might steal your things and just mess with the land you are hunting on.  Game cameras are also good for just seeing what is on the land you are hunting, since you cannot be out there 24/7.  They also tell the time and date when each picture was taken and help out a lot with knowing what to expect to see when you go hunting.

Hunters also walk around their hunting area looking for buck rubs(where a buck rubs his antlers on a tree).  They also look for deer droppings or scrapes (where deer rubs against the ground).  Sometimes you will spook (scare) some deer while looking for scrapes and rubs or just walking around exploring.
