Businesses begin cutting ties with the NRA

By Angelina Addams

As many student survivors of the Stoneman Douglass High School advocate for stricter gun restriction laws that are actually enforced, many people have begun to look at the National Rifle Association for answers.

The NRA is a nonprofit organization that is for the second amendment.  The organization receives about $52.6 million annually through donations, advertising, and grants. The NRA often supports political campaigns and many common businesses.

Because they give so much money to businesses, many people have begun to boycott the businesses that are supported by the NRA, and the businesses that are refusing to cut off ties with the NRA. However, there are many businesses who are cutting ties with the NRA and changing the way they sell guns to consumers, advocating for a change in our gun laws.

For example, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Walmart, and Kroger Co. changed their policy so that no one under the age of 21 will be able to buy a gun. Dick’s Sporting Goods will also stop selling assault rifles completely.  Many other companies, such as Delta Air Lines, Hertz, and Best Western, have cut their ties with the NRA completely.

In the upcoming weeks after the Stoneman Douglass High School massacre, the United States is likely to see an increase in a cry for change when it comes to the laws regarding our weapons. The gun debate in America has been going on for years; usually there’s a mass shooting, we debate about gun safety, but quickly forget about the issue, a seemingly never-ending cycle. However, this time seems to be different, and many are hopeful that it will result in gun control laws that will protect the people of the United States.
