Lady Gators Fall to Spartans in Tournament Play

By Anna Hewitt

Yesterday evening, Tuesday, February 20, the Lady Gators struggled to hold off Lady Spartans in the District Tournament, who are top ten in the state. Greenwood, although not favored to win, tried their best to defend their home court.

The first quarter started out pretty even, with the Spartans only leading by 7 points. The Gators fought hard to defend, however, the quarter ended with the score 19-12 in the Spartans favor. As the second quarter began, the Spartans took the initiative of the match.

They dominated the Greenwood team and outscored them with 22 points just in the second quarter. The score was then 43-14 at halftime, which gave the Lady Spartans a comfortable lead going into the last stretch of the game.

In the second half of the game, the Spartans dominated the court. For the Spartans, Jordan McDonald led the team with a grand total of 18 points, senior Amaya Lasley scored 9, and Natalie Pierce finished with seven. Greenwood was led in points by freshman Jacqueline Jackson with 6.

With a final score of 63-20, the Spartans will advance to the District 14 Championship. Warren East and Bowling Green play Thursday, February 22 at the swamp to determine who will play the Spartans in the championship.  The Spartans will also move onto the region tournament, which will take place at Diddle Arena.
