The Lady Gators warm up for their game against Butler County

The Lady Gators basketball team is full of familiar faces, but there are also some new ones that people may not recognize.  This team is full of individuals that love the game of basketball, and work hard every day to make sure they are doing the best for their team.

Returning seniors on the team include Riley Hartis, Abbie Turley, and Chandler Flynt.  Hartis has been a part of the Greenwood team for seven years.  In an interview with Hartis, we asked what her favorite memory she made on the team was.  She replied, “When Coach asked “What does defense end with?” and Chandler responded “e”.  The answer was supposed to be a rebound.”  Playing forward on the team, Hartis says her role on the team is to be a good captain and teammate.

Allison Wheeler and Carly Miller are juniors on the basketball team.  This will be their third year playing for the Gators.  Allison Wheeler plays guard, while Carly Miller is center.  “I feel like the rest of this season is going to be eye-opening for us, and that will lead to us getting the dubs.  I’m looking forward to the district tournament and finally beating Bowling Green” Wheeler commented.

Sophomores include Philicia Riser and Megan Une. The Freshmen, making up the largest class, include Lourdes Peric, Meredith Clack, Mekayla Van Wyk, Rachel Evans, Haley Gordon, Jacqueline Jackson, Savannah Hartis, Nicole Milam, Kylie Breece, and Honest Blewitt.

Zach Simpson is the head coach of the team, assisted by Bill Jackson, Alex Paris, and Dylan Carter. Managing the team is freshman, Autumn Kirby.  This will be Simpsons second year coaching the Lady Gators, and is also the former assistant coach at Logan County.  Bill Jackson has assisted for five years, and this will be Alex Paris’ first year assisting.  Dylan Carter was a former player on the team, coached by Todd Tolbert.

Lady Gators get ready to defend the basket in a game against Bowling Green Purples

The Lady Gators will play a total of 27 games this season, with eight of those games against district competitors.  The team hopes to do well this season, and pull out big victories against talented teams.  They look forward to the district tournament where they hope to finally make it back to the region tournament.  However, they know this will be a challenge that they will have to fight for.
