WKU Loses a Legend

By Meredith Clack, Reporter

On Tuesday, January 9, WKU lost one of its famous voices. Wesley “Wes” Strader was a play-by-play broadcaster for the Men’s Basketball and Football programs. He started this job in 1964 and continued for more than 36 years.

He is from a town in Barren County called Hiseville, where he grew up on his family’s dairy farm. At age 10, he started attending his first WKU games with his father, who was a season-ticket holder.

In 2013, he was honored with his own banner in E.A. Diddle Arena; it is alongside fellow WKU basketball legends. He remains the only person to ever be honored with a banner that is not a former coach or athlete. He passed away at age 79.
