The students of Greenwood have all sorts of hidden and unique talents. Art is great class in which one can express these talents. These extraordinary ideas can both be praised and appreciated by being displayed outside the art room. An example of these talents is the hard work both Audrey Fones and Kirsten Merritt have put in by constructing Art’s very first dresses. These dresses have been made from unusual materials, catching the attention of many and turning heads in the hallways.

Audrey Fones is a sophomore at Greenwood, she is an accomplished artist who has created the card dress many have seen and admired in the hallway. Her main inspiration was her love of playing cards when she was little and it sparked her creativity to bring it to life, using her fashion skills. When creating the dress she used four packs of playing cards and added tissue paper to build up the skirt. She used a pattern of red and black repeating on the skirt, and randomly filled in the crop top with numbers. She accented the dress with a necklace of poker chips. This process was very time consuming and it took her two and a half months to complete. When talking to Audrey about the time it took her to make the dress, she laughed and said, “It took a lot of patience.”

Kirsten Merritt, a Junior, has created another dress at the request of Mrs. Soule, that was she made in two weeks. Her inspiration for her piece was gypsies, and her aspiration to travel the world when older. She used wallpaper, which she painted gold and silver, and pearls to construct her dress. She used the scraps of wallpaper from Mrs. Soules room and created a masterpiece with the resources around her.

Both Audrey and Kirsten’s dresses have been entered in the Scholastic Competition, and they both have the opportunity to win an award for their artwork.

Both artists also have designs for another dress. Audrey plans to make a dress made out of gold, spray-painted leaves. Kirsten’s idea for her next dress is butterfly themed; the top of her dress will be a butterfly’s wings and leaves will decorate the skirt of it.
