Getting Your First Job

Getting your first job seems really scary and hard, but it’s just part of growing up. You’ve been wanting to feel like an adult and a job is one of the first few ways to do that. You will get rejection emails and phone calls, but it’s just part of it, so don’t stress too much. Someone will find interest in you.

I remember how I was when I was 14 or 15: I thought I could get a job almost anywhere when I turned 16 just because I was of legal age, but you really aren’t. Most people want 18-year-olds so they can have them work more hours. If anyone hires you, it will be a fast-food place. You may not like working in fast food, but trust me you’ll love that paycheck without a doubt..

Now just a few tips for you: actually go in and get a application; do not apply online. I happened to only apply online and I didn’t get a single job, not even a call! I was absolutely devastated, but I filled out a paper application and it went a lot better! I got a interview with a little help, but I still got the interview so I was hyped! There are other things you need to know before going after your first job, though.

Do you like coloring your hair wacky unnatural colors? For example, blue and purple? So do I, but some places won’t allow that. Not out of the fact that they find it trashy, because that’s rude and I wouldn’t want to work for a company like that. Basically it’s because those colors of hair can be very distracting, and they want their customers looking at all of their deals and food, not one of their worker’s hair color. It’s also considered to be more professional.

You also might not always get along with the managers, but trust me they have their fun good days. They are the same as you, but they hold a higher position. For example, we joke around a lot with our managers when we aren’t busy, but we all know that once we start getting busy that we need to concentrate on that and not horse play. Just know that if they ask you to do something they are doing it to keep the place running and not trying to be mean or anything.

Customers WILL be rude. Just realize that it’s not your fault and calm down and you can just go with the flow. Customer service is what some places strive on, so always smiling when people come in may feel unnatural for some people. People will and can complain on you, and it could possibly be a lie but don’t sweat it too much.
