Fooling Around On April Fools

By Farley Wood, Reporter

April 1, the day anyone can get away with foolishness and jokes. Aprils Fools Day is a time to pull pranks on your friends and family, or try to get that one gullible friend to believe a ridiculous, made up story. But where did this tradition of pranking others come from?

The exact origin of April Fools Day is unknown, but there are many speculations about where it comes from. Some historians believe it came about when the calendar switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. The New Year under the Julian calendar was celebrated around the first of April. When the calendar changed, the New Year was now celebrated on January 1. The people who were unaware of this change and still celebrated the New Year on April 1 were made fun of and joked about.

Other possible beginnings to April Fools Day could be the Roman festival Hilaria, that was celebrated by people dressing up is disguise, and the spring equinox where Mother Nature would “fool” people with her unpredictably changing weather.

Today April Fools is used as a day to make fun of friends and family by getting them to fall for silly jokes. While many people forget about April Fools, there are those who like to go as far as they can to get someone to play into their tricks.

Here are some simple prank ideas for you:

  1. Tell a friend their favorite sports player has been traded to another team.
  2. Reveal to a friend that you are moving away
  3. Get someone to eat a treat you’ve tampered with (such as replacing the cream in oreos with toothpaste)
  4. Convince a friend you’ve had an accident over spring break
  5. Lead your parents to believe you’re failing a class

If you’re one for bigger pranks, here are some larger scale pranks for you:

  1. Cover someone’s car in sticky notes
  2. Autocorrect a word in someone’s phone to be replaced with a long Star Wars quote
  3. Saran Wrap a doorway and call someone into the room
  4. Put picture of Nicholas Cage up everywhere in someone’s house
  5. Tell someone you’re making them brownies, and cut out brown E’s to give them instead
