Artists Win Big at the 2017 Grammy Awards
February 14, 2017
If you didn’t get to tune into the Grammy’s on Sunday night, here are the big things you missed:
- Adele opened the show with “Hello,” followed by James Corden, the host for the night, falling down the stairs on his way to the main stage. Adele also performed in the George Michael tribute; she messed up the beginning and made sure to start over to get it perfect. Adele took home five awards on Sunday, including Album of the Year and Song of the Year, both of which she dedicated to Beyonce, asking at one point if Beyonce could be her “mummy.”
- Chance the Rapper won Best New Artist and Best Rap Album (for “Coloring Book,” a big honor since the album was a streaming-only album) giving “all glory to God” both times as well as performing a medley of “How Great,” “Blessings,” “No Problem,” and “All We Got.”
- Twenty One Pilots won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for Stressed Out. They accepted the awards without pants. Tyler Joseph told the story about the reason behind them accepting the award pantless, the reason being a promise they made to each other before they became big, promising to accept their first Grammy in only their underwear.
- Bruno Mars first performed “That’s What I Like” by himself before transforming into Prince for a
tribute with The Time. Mars, wearing the purple-sequined suit and eyeliner, performed “Jungle Love,” “The Bird,” and “Let’s Go Crazy” after Prince’s voice started the introduction to the song.
- Beyonce won Best Urban Contemporary Album and gave a powerful performance about motherhood and being a woman. Blue Ivy really stole the show during James Corden’s “Cardboard Karaoke” as well as coming to the Grammy’s dressed as a miniature version of Prince.
- Greenwood Alums, Cage the Elephant, took home the award for Best Rock Album for their recent album Tell Me I’m Pretty, which was released in December of 2015. Cage beat out Blink-182, Gojira, Panic! At The Disco, and Weezer.

Many celebrities take the Grammys as an opportunity to dress up and show off their style, see Matt Shultz’s new shoe line he released on Sunday. CeeLo Green took the Grammys as an opportunity to show off his new persona, “Gnarly Davidson.” A fully gold character who looks like C3PO and a Ferrero Rocher had a baby. This look inspired many, many memes making fun of CeeLo.
