Greenwood Beta Members Going to Disney World

By Avery Witcher and Madeleine Wilson

The Beta Club took many of its members to the State Beta Convention in Lexington on January 22nd to the 24th.  The convention was held in the Lexington Convention Center connected to the Hyatt. The students who decided to attend prepared months before the actual convention. There are many different competitions that you can compete in at convention. These include visual arts, different written tests, scrapbooking and banners, talent, speech, and many more. Only one student from each school can compete in a certain event.  Visual arts participants, which include competitions such as scrapbook, jewelry, photography, and others, prepare and complete their projects for their events prior to arriving at the convention.

While at the convention, not only did the attendees participate in competitions, but also dances, General Assemblies, and electing the new Kentucky state officials of Beta.

Out of many contestants, Greenwood came back with multiple top finishers.

Lexi Stewart, a junior, took 2nd place in Black and White Photography.

Freshman Owen Mefford received 3rd place in Creating Writing. Competing in this event required him to write a piece with a topic given to him on the day of the event.

Each school is also allowed to enter a scrapbook to display the activities that the Beta Club members are involved in, as well as a majority of the the volunteer events.  Victoria Bucklew, Rileigh Stivers, Kelsey Dinning, Madeleine Wilson, and Avery Witcher, all juniors, claimed 3rd place in this competition.  “We all worked really hard on the scrapbook to give us our best chance for Nationals.  Each one of us had a role, whether it was writing, designing the pages, or incorporating everything together,” says Victoria.

Each of these finishers have earned their spot to attend Nationals in Disney World this summer.

Sierra Earnhart was the competitor from Greenwood in the Special Talent category, performing an advanced hula hoop routine that got her in the top 5, just missing Nationals.

“I was so happy to win for not only my scrapbooking team but for my school too. Also I’m so excited to be heading to Disney World for Nationals,” said Madeleine.
