Question 1

The answer was: Ohio!

The semi-circle shape of both Ohio and South Africa makes them look pretty similar, but South Africa is unique in that it surrounds another, very small country, Lesotho, which makes it look like it has a big hole in the middle of it.

Question #4

The answer was: Missouri!

These two are similar in their right trapezoidal shape. However, Egypt stands out because of the addition of the Sinai Peninsula–that little piece that hangs off the side. Additionally, Missouri has portions that jut out on the left side and on the bottom. Other than that, though, they have the same basic shape, so it would be easy to mix them up in a rough sketch!

Question #6

The answer was: Mali!

Mali and New York share their charming sailboat shape, but an easy way to tell them apart is that they’re basically mirrors of each other. Oh, and no New Yorker would allow you to get by without recognizing the distinctiveness of the state’s “tail,” Long Island.

There’s not much to say about these two. Side by side, they look very different. But on their own, there’s just not much to tell them apart by.

Question #9

The answer was: Vermont!

Most people don’t know what Benin looks like, so maybe you guessed safe on this one. On a map, though, these two both just look like straight slits, so this is actually a hard question if you haven’t looked at them closely.

Question #10

The answer was: Equatorial Guinea!

Now, you might think “These two look nothing alike!” And it’s true, their actual shapes are very different. However, most people don’t remember their shapes, and in fact some haven’t even seen them at all, because they’re so tiny that they’re barely visible on a map. So, below each there’s a map, zoomed into the region where they can be found. Look how small they are!
