The series starts with young Katniss Everdeen who is selected in the annual Hunger Games. Each of the districts in Panem are forced to send one boy and one girl between ages 12 and 18 to fight for their lives. The Capital doesn’t want the people to forget the rebellion that happened over 70 years ago is the reason why the Hunger Games were invented. Katniss’s little sister, Prim, is originally chosen to compete, but Katniss volunteers to take her place instead in order to protect her. This leads to Katniss fueling the rebellion against The Capital because of her sacrifice and love for her sister.

Divergent is set in an utterly heinous and degrading society. In this trilogy people of the community are defined by certain dominant personality traits, and placed into five different factions. Placing the people into factions makes sure that no one becomes more powerful than others. Beatrice Prior, known as Tris, is one of the few divergents. A divergent is one who has more than one personality trait and faction that you fit into, which the new society saw as a threat. These books follow her fight for survival and freedom from this restricting society.

Clary soon realizes that no one else can see these Shadowhunters, so she returns home to her mother. When she gets home her mother is gone and has been taken by Valentine. She begins to learn how to survive in the new life that surrounds her. These books follow the pain, happiness, and anger that comes about her learning about her true past.
