Witcher sisters lead swim team
January 8, 2016
Team captain Avery Witcher and her sister Claudia gave insight on what it is like to be a swimmer for Greenwood. Their practices have a range of intensity levels like all sports, but what makes swimming so unique is the times their practices take place.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, they have two practices a day and their first practice takes place at 5 to 6:45 in the morning. “You have to be willing to give up a majority of your free time and be 100 percent committed to swim,” they said.
The swim team is a mix of students from all Warren County Schools that compete for their individual schools but all practice together and are coached by Scott Gainey. “Swimming sounds like it’s an individual sport, but most don’t wanna do it without a team; a team makes swimming more enjoyable,” Avery said.
As usual, Bowling Green is Greenwood’s toughest competition. “They have a lot more people and experience,” the sister duo confirmed. The swim team competes in meets against teams from all over the state, including Bowling Green. Unlike most sports, swimming is scored by your fastest time instead of points, you can also win individually and as a team.
Last year Avery was given the athlete of the week award by Bowling Green Daily News, and is continuing to improve alongside with her sister. To view the story on Avery click here and to see the Warren County swim team site click here.
