Spoiler Alert: Top 5 Movies With Plot Twists

By Chad Van Wyk, Editor/Reporter

Throughout cinema history, there have been many plot twists. Some of them are very unpredictable and left people talking about them for ages, while some of them are poorly delivered. Below are my picks for the top five greatest plot twists in cinematic history.

  1. Fight Club
This David Fincher film follows an unnamed insomniac who narrates his life which he views as empty, and boring. The unnamed character meets a soap seller with a more extreme view on society named Tyler Durden.  The unnamed character moves in with Tyler after his apartment mysteriously explodes, under the condition that the narrator doesn’t talk to anybody about him. The two then start an illegal Fight Club, which the narrator uses to cure his insomnia. The members of the Fight Club look up to Tyler as their leader and they begin a series of terrorism and extremism called Project Mayhem. The further Project Mayhem goes, the more the narrator learns about himself and about Tyler.
  2. The Usual Suspects
This film is told in the point of view of a disabled criminal named Verbal Kint, given his nickname due to his constant and fast speaking. After a supposed drug deal gone wrong results in a great number of casualties, the police investigate Verbal because he was at the deal. Verbal tells the story about how he met a group of criminals all in jail under interrogation, and how they begin doing heists together. The group inadvertently steals from an unseen crime boss named Kaiser Sose. To repay him, they must go to a drug deal, and steal the money off of the boat where the drug deal is taking place. One member of the group tries to runaway and avoid taking part in the nearly impossible mission, which leads to him becoming an example to why you can’t outrun the powerful Kaiser Sose. The crew begins the heist and things are going well for them, that is until Kaiser Sose shows up and begins killing them one by one. As Detective Kujan continues with his investigation, he discovers what Kaiser Sose can do.
  3. Psycho
This movie is one of the first slasher movies in cinematic history. It follows Norman Bates, a man who runs a remote hotel, along side his insane mother, who he still lives with. Marion Cane, a women who is on the run from the police checks into Bates Motel, and is mysteriously killed by mother. Norman cleans up after Mother and does away with the corpse.
Arbogast, a private investigator is looking for Marion, which leads him to Bates Motel. He discovers that Marion checked into the motel, and lets Sam Loomis, Marion’s lover know. He intends on talking to Mother about Marion’s disappearance and sneaks into the Bates’ house. As he is going upstairs, Mother attacks and kills him. The disappearance of Marion and Arbogast prompts Sam Loomis to take a trip up to Bates Motel. Searching for answers, Sam learns more and more about the mysterious Bates’ family and the violent actions of Mother.
  4. The Sixth Sense
The movie opens up to Malcolm Crowe returning home to his wife after being rewarded for his work as a child psychologist. Crowe and his wife discover that his former patient Vincent Grey. Vincent believes that Crowe failed him and shoots him in the abdomen, and then kills himself. The next fall Crowe returns to his work after recovering, and begins working with Cole Sear, a young boy with a condition similar to what Vincent had.  He works hard to avoid letting what happened to Vincent happen to Cole, which causes problems in his marriage due to his focus on work. When Crowe earns Cole’s trust, Cole tells him that he can see dead people. Crowe then wonders if Vincent had the same ability.
Crowe tells Cole that he needs to help the dead finish their business on Earth, and give his gift a purpose. Cole begins working through his fear of the ghosts and helps them. As Cole helps the ghosts, he also helps Crowe discover the troubles in his marriage.
