Greenwood High School Volleyball is a great sport for incoming freshman and former high school students. This year’s 2024 Greenwood Volleyball open gyms lasted from early May to Early July. Greenwood Volleyball open gyms are a really great activity to participate in during the summertime, away from school.
During the open gyms, you learn new skills and techniques. Open gyms initially last around two hours. This is a great way for coaches to understand the way you play so they can get a better understanding of what to expect from you at tryouts. The layout of open gyms starts with setting up the equipment like nets and getting balls. Once enough people arrive, you practice with a skill called “peppering”. This is performed with a partner as a warm-up drill to start your body up. Then you will stretch, informing yourself that by doing this, you will not hurt yourself in a way you wouldn’t like. Once this is done, you then do the main part of the open gyms- drills. Drills are practices you do with your whole team. When drills are done sometimes, there will be conditioning, Conditioning starts to cool down after some time of continuous open gyms. With any remaining time that you may have left, the coaches might like to do fun games or practice scrimmages. If you consider playing volleyball for Greenwood next year, the open gyms are a huge help!
After some time, you will have a break in open gyms called “Dead Period”. This time is when all sports don’t participate in any sort of practices or events. This period can affect your playing time, because you are taking a sudden break from being on a consistent schedule of open gyms every week. Make sure that during this time, you make an effort to still practice outside of open gym hours. This could even mean calling up a
friend and asking to play in your backyard. It’s as simple as that!
Now it’s time for tryouts! One of the most important parts of the summer. Tryouts are like an extended open gym. While open gyms last a couple of months, tryouts only last a couple of days. By the last day of tryouts, you should receive a message on if you made the team or not.
