Sarah Rowland, Cheyanne Trimble, and Olive Jaynes are juniors at Greenwood High School. Sarah is number 24, Cheyanne is number 10, and Olive is our goalie number 0. The objective of the game is simple. You play on a field roughly the size of a soccer field. In the middle of the field there is a large circle where the game begins with a draw where two opponents throw the ball up in the air with their sticks and race to be the first to grab hold of the ball again. After a girl has the ball they try to race to the other end of the field to get a goal making sure not to cross over the crease which is a circle around the goal that only the goalie is allowed to be in. The two big differences between the girls team and the boys are that the girls are not allowed to have contact and the two fields have different paint lines meaning a few different rules. Whichever one you play, whether you’re a boy or girl, lacrosse is meant to be a fun sport to play.
Rowland said “You would prefer to have gloves, goggles, cleats, a stick, and a mouth guard.” to play the game. She stated “the coach (Hannah Hartley) can let you use some of her equipment if needed.” Rowland said that she believes that “There is about a $100 fee for transportation. Which would be bus money for away games.” She also said that “open fields are in late fall and games start late February till the end of May.” Baseball and Softball along with the musical are a few that do run into the lacrosse season. She stated that you should know some simple rules like the girls lacrosse team is no contact, and you should stay in your zone of the field, and then there are stick rules like we can’t have deep sticks. She said “Practices usually last two hours and last till 5:00 to 7:00 or if the temperature changes then 5:30 to 7:00.” She said that “You get good exercise and that it’s very humbling.” She also said “It’s very team oriented and teaches you how to work as a team instead of individually”.
Next up, Cheyanne said “the forwards are the ones that try to score, and then there’s mid which is forward and defense, and then there’s defense which is protecting the goal.” She said “you should practice a lot and try to connect with your teammates.” She recommended lacrosse because “It’s a fun sport and you make a lot of friends.” She stated it’s kind of hectic at first on the field, but then your mind just clears, and you just play. She said “We do fundraisers (also merch such as hats, bags, shirts, and hoodies), and some of the team tries to hangout outside of practice.” She said lacrosse is different then other sports at Greenwood because it’s one of the only ones where you need hand-eye coordination and speed. She said her favorite memory of begging on the team was “The Central Hardin game”.
Lastly Olive, she said “If you’re just playing in the field then you need a stick, cleats, goggles, and a mouth guard, and that’s all you need.” She said she doesn’t remember if you have to pay, but you can always ask coach Hannah if needed to. She stated the season “lasts at least February to April, but open fields will start at like September or October”. She said Bowling, and Softball goes on during the lacrosse season so you would have to do one or the other. She stated you really don’t need to know any of the rules, and even said she didn’t know all the rules, but you need to have a good attitude when you show up.”She stated normally practices “last to around 2 hours and depending on what the coach has planned for the day, it’s usually working on throwing, catching, running, and working on attack and midfield.” She said she would recommend playing lacrosse because “It’s a really fun sport and it’s really nice to be with other people and be around nice people and if you have a good attitude yeah,” (All photos taken by KT Nobles.)
