Opinions on Colleen Hoover’s romance novels are very controversial, especially in Greenwood High School. These books are about romantic relationships and are very popular among students and some teachers in Greenwood High School. Based on the interviews of people who enjoyed this series, Verity was the overall favorite book among students. This book was highly liked because of the main character, Verity, and her personality. Interviewees also say there are many plot twists with the storyline being unpredictable and interesting.
Freshman student Liv Schindler says, “… it had like a lot of plot twists and it was really good.” Another highly liked book by Colleen Hoover was Ugly Love. Liv Shindler was also interviewed on this book, and said her favorite character Miles because his character developed well throughout the story and grew stronger as a character. Liv said that she would not change anything about this book because it was so good, but she disliked that the main character was stuck on his ex. Aaliyah Sejmenovic, a Freshman student at Greenwood High School, said her favorite character in Ugly Love was Tate because she has a funny attitude and is really smart. Aaliyah also said she enjoyed the books so much that she read them through multiple times.
However, Mrs. McGinty, a teacher at Greenwood High School, has a different point of view on the Colleen Hoover romance novels. She has read three Colleen Hoover books and does not plan on reading anymore because she strongly dislikes them. Mrs. McGinty does not have a favorite book from this series but her least favorite was a commonly liked book, Verity. She disliked it because the characters were not believable or likable, and the storyline was not carried out well. When asked if she read the whole book or skipped parts in the book Mrs. McGinty said, “I read the entire book and threw it when I was done.” Mrs. McGinty also says the Colleen Hoover romance novels have a bad influence on younger readers about relationships and decisions overall. If she could change anything about these books, she would change the writer because none of the characters are realistic or relatable. McGinty said, “The author had ALMOST good ideas for the plots, but the characters weren’t relatable or realistic.”
Another question Mrs. McGinty was asked, “If Colleen Hoover were to write a new series (such as a horror or fantasy novel) would she read it?” Laughing, she answered, “I don’t think she (the writer) could pull off a horror, I don’t think she could do it. Based on Verity, I don’t think she could do it.” Mrs. McGinty’s final words in her interview were, “Do not read Colleen Hoover, I will tell you other authors to read. I promise you there are better books out there.”
