Hunter S. Thompson, a bizarre Journalist. Born July 18th, 1937 in Louisville Kentucky, and led the movement towards Gonzo Journalism. Gonzo Journalism is a different branch than the standard type of news journalism. It included one’s personal experience along with a combination of self-critique and self-satire. Thompson in his youth had multiple run-ins with the law. In 1956 Thompson had joined the US Air Force to shorten his jail time. While in the military they wanted Thompson to drop his creative journalistic ways. Thompson then wrote a fake news release, insuring he would get the last word. Thompson was then later discharged from the Air Force in 1957.
Career
Hunter S. Thompson, born on July 18th, 1937 in Louisville Kentucky. Whom has had a father that died while Thompson was just 14. Thompson attended I.N. Bloom Elementary School, Highland Middle School, Atherton High School, and Louisville Male High School. Thompson was athletic at the time and got invited to Louisville’s Castlewood Athletic Club, where he excelled in basketball. When apart of the Louisville High School, Thompson was made part of the elite school sponsored literary association, where his early works were published and displayed. Later he was expelled from Louisville Male High School due to him being charged of being an accessory to the Athenaeum Literary Robbery. He had the choice of going to prison, or apply for the military. He took the militaristic path to avoid prison time. Once in the |Air Force he transferred from the Lackland Air Force Base located in Texas, to the Scott Air Force Base located in Illinois to pursue an education in Electronics in 1956. Thompson later applied to be an Aviator, which was denied so he transferred to Eglin Air Force Base located near Florida, and attended evening classes. After transferring to the Egil Air Force Base, Thompson he got his first start as a Sports Editor of The Command Courier. Leading on to 1958, Thompson was honorably discharged from the military. Soon after that Thompson relocated to Puerto Rico, where he worked as a freelance journalist. Many years later Thompson was sent to Zaire, Africa to cover the Muhammad Ali vs. George Foreman.
