Gamora is the Reason We Can't Have Nice Things

“Marvel’s Infinity War” flooded screens around the world, hitting 4th on highest box office grossing films at a little over $2 billion. Marvel fans of all ages laughed and cried together over the emotional roller coaster that was Infinity War. Debatably one of the most heart-wrenching moment in all of Marvel history occurred in this movie: Thanos pushing Gamora off a cliff to get the soul stone.

Not too long after, the rest of the Guardians, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange join together in an epic battle to obtain the gauntlet and protect the time stone. They very nearly succeed, only for Star-Lord to discover what happened to Gamora, which led to him punching Thanos and ruining their chances of winning.

By this point, the entirety of the audience wanted to slap some sense into Star-Lord, but is this moment of defeat really his fault?

Before Gamora is captured, she asks Star-Lord to kill her if Thanos tried to capture her. As sincere and surprisingly romantic this scene is, Gamora should have known that Star-Lord would hesitate too long, questioning if he could force himself to pull the trigger.

Throughout both of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, he acts on his emotions, rarely disregarding them. In Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Star-Lord immediately starts shooting Ego after learning that it was Ego that put the tumor in the head of his mother, Meredith. He didn’t think about what the consequences may be, only focusing on his rage in that moment.

On the other hand, he would likely struggle to ignore his love for Gamora to potentially save the universe. As much time as Gamora spent with Star-Lord, she should have known that he would hesitate. They didn’t know if Thanos had gotten the reality stone yet or not, but they did know that he was powerful. Anything Star-Lord would do after a moment’s hesitation would most likely be too late, regardless if the shot was turned to bubbles or not.

Once on the Collectors ship, Gamora completely ignores the logical plan Star-Lord created, jumping out to attack Thanos without cooperating with her teammates. Lingering there for a few more seconds would have allowed the Guardians to come up with a course of action. As it was, Gamora goes out ahead of everyone else and tries to kill Thanos alone.

Once she is captured and on Thanos’ ship, Gamora refuses to reveal the location of the soul stone. Thanos then leads Gamora to her sister Nebula. Nebula is tortured until Gamora agrees to lead Thanos to the soul stone.

Although this is a very human reaction and it would be more concerning if Gamora did not stop him, actually leading Thanos to the location is a different thing entirely. Gamora could have lead him anywhere in the universe, and Thanos wouldn’t know until they got there. Gamora and Nebula were trained together, so Gamora should have known that Nebula is highly capable of escaping if there was a distraction. For example, Thanos looking for the soul stone.

On top of it all, she only tries to sacrifice herself after leading Thanos to the location. Gamora knows that Thanos has the reality stone. She should know that he wouldn’t allow her to die before he could use her to get the soul stone. If Gamora had even the smallest speck of common sense, she would see that if she was going to have to kill herself to save half the universe, she would have to do it before leading Thanos to the Soul Stone. Even if she had succeeded in sacrificing herself, there had to be something or someone else that Thanos loved, though perhaps not to the same extent as Gamora.

No one should blame Star-Lord for the snap. He only did what anyone would do in this situation. Gamora, on the other hand, acted rashly and blatantly ignored her friends’ plans and emotions.
