Is Trump Taking Over the News?
September 12, 2018
Today’s news is constantly flooded with articles about our president, Donald Trump. Whether it’s a new controversial Tweet or decisions, Trump’s name appears everywhere. But how often are his actions featured in everyday news?
For five days, I scanned the headlines of various news organizations, making note of every time Donald Trump is the basis of an article.
On the first day, the results were varied, ranging from The Wall Street Journal having no articles about our president to The Washington Post, which had three. BBC seemed to have the most variation in their topics, not having two articles that fell under the same category. The New York Times and Wall Street Journal, on the other hand, both seemed to lean towards crimes or crises. Overall, the most common news category was crimes/crises, followed closely by Trump-related and other national politics.
Halfway through the week, crimes/crises remained the most written-about topic at roughly two per news source per week, still followed by Trump-related at roughly one per news source per week.
By the end of the week, at 14 out of 25 articles, The Washington Post had the most news related to President Trump. On the other hand, The New York Times had the least at only two. Followed closely by The Wall Street Journal at three.
The combined news source showed that the most prevalent news source, at 46 total articles, was crimes and crises. This number, however, could be slightly skewed as Hurricane Florence has drawn close to the U.S. Right behind crimes/crises are Trump news at 33 articles and other politics at 23.
Just be careful of the news you’re presented with. Even without directly lying to the audience, news organizations can make the world out to be the way they want, just with the types of articles they present.
If all that was presented to us were related to crimes being committed around the U.S., America would feel like an unsafe place to live. As more and more news becomes related to our President, we as the audience must be careful not to be persuaded one way or another due to these articles.
