Super Bowl 2018: Commercial Ratings
29. The Empty Spot
The thirty-seconds of nothingness was a surprise, and I kept expecting something to pop up. However, I was disappointed as it ended up just being a black screen. NBC claims that this was a “brief equipment failure”.
28. Diet Coke
Honestly, this commercial creeped me out. It consisted of a quirky blonde girl drinking a mango diet coke, which actually sounds disgusting. The odd flavored diet coke made her dance awkwardly while I sat there and cringed. The commercial ends with the new flavors that Diet Coke have announced Ginger Lime, Feisty Cherry, Zesty Blood Orange, and Twisted Mango. Let’s just stick with normal Diet Coke.
27. Ram (Commercial two)
This commercial featuring a Ram truck with a voiceover from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. received criticism from many people. Many people took to twitter to express their unhappiness with the company using King’s words.
26. Squarespace
In a very confusing commercial, Keanu Reeves is riding on a motorcycle while standing up. I didn’t quite get what this had to do with squarespace, but I was very impressed with Reeves’ skills. However, it was not one of my favorite commercials of the night.
25. Tide
Tide could’ve gotten a bit more creative in their constant commercials. You see actor, David Harbour (who I love), in different scenes with actors wearing bright, spotless clothing. They try to fool you making you think the ad will be for beer, razors, or a car. However, Harbour always pops up with the line “Tide Ad”. I didn’t find it funny at all, and honestly it was kind of annoying so I put it near the bottom of my list.
24. Bud Light
This wasn’t one of my favorite Bud Light commercials, and I think they have put out some better ones this year. I am a big fan of the “dilly dilly”, but I feel like this commercial could’ve had a bit more humor.
23. Lexus
The Lexus commercial included new superhero, Black Panther. This movie is already very popular, and has broken Fandango’s record for pre-ticket sales. I am very excited to see this movie, and I was glad to see Lexus incorporate it into their commercial. However, it wasn’t that exciting, and it was a pretty basic car commercial.
22. Groupon
Tiffany Haddish made this commercial great. When she was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel, she told a story about how she used Groupon for a discount on her Louisiana swamp tour with Will and Jada Smith. The backstory makes the commercial funnier, but her laugh at the end is what really made me laugh.
21. T-Mobile
T-Mobile created a heartwarming commercial about equality. They used babies of all different races to really push their message “We are Equal”. It didn’t have much to do with cell phones, but it was a good message and the babies were especially cute.
20. Toyota (Commercial one)
Toyota’s commercial, which barely mentioned the brand itself, was a heartwarming story on Lauren Woolstencroft. She is missing both of her legs below the knee, and her left arm ends at the elbow. She has won a total of ten medals, eight of them gold, while competing in the paralympics. It truly is a heartwarming story, but again it had nothing to do with Toyota.
19. Coca-Cola
The Coke commercial is always nice, and meant to be uplifting. However, I feel like I’ve already seen this commercial before. Coke always has a wide range of people having fun and drinking Coke. I would just like to see something a little bit different, but other than that it was pretty good.
18. Michelob
Michelob had several commercials, all featuring Chris Pratt. In the first commercial Pratt was super excited to finally land a big role and we can see him practicing his lines. In the rest of the commercials, Pratt is meant to be seen as an extra and is always doing something odd in the background. The commercial was funny, but there could’ve been some improvements.
17. Jeep
With a nod to Jurassic Park, the Jeep commercial featured Jeff Goldblum in 1993 and present day. While being chased by a Tyrannosaurus Rex, we see Goldblum in a Jeep in the original Jurassic Park. The scene transitions to present day Jeff Goldblum in the 2018 Jeep Wrangler, still being chased by the T-Rex. Jurassic Park fans loved this commercial.
16. Febreze
I have to be honest, it took me a while to understand #bleepdontstink. I probably am the only person who had this problem though. Febreze created a character, that does not stink. For some reason though, I thought the character’s name was bleep. I later realized the actual joke. The character, Dave, does not stink, so he doesn’t even need Febreze. The commercial is hilarious, and props to Febreze for no longer blindfolding people and sticking them in rooms full of cat litter.
15. Toyota (Commercial two)
Toyota was trying to teach us all a lesson about diversity, and acceptance. They did a pretty good job too. Their commercial showed a catholic, jew, muslim, and buddhist all in a Toyota truck together headed to the big game. They made a few jokes about traffic, but they weren’t very funny. However, the message itself made the ad good.
14. Stella Artois
The company had a good thought in mind, using their commercial to promote donating clean water to underdeveloped countries. They even used Matt Damon to help catch people’s attention. While it was nothing special, they were trying to do good, and that is all that matters.
13. Universal Studios
Peyton Manning, at Universal Studios was actually funnier than I thought it was going to be. He dressed up like Harry Potter practicing his “swish and flick” skills, his churro was intercepted by a little girl, sat front seat on a roller coaster, and was scared by a velociraptor. Overall, it was a pretty good commercial.
12. Kia
This commercial features Steven Tyler driving a Kia in reverse on a race track to “Dream On”. In the end he got out of the car as his younger self, while fans screamed on the side. Kia released their new car, Stinger, while Aerosmith fans enjoyed watching Steven Tyler.
11. Australia Tourism
An unexpected commercial from Australia featuring Chris Hemsworth was actually quite funny. The commercial acts like a reboot of the movie “Crocodile Dundee”. Danny McBride plays the son of the famous legend, and the movie is about him returning to Australia from New York. Some of the humor comes from the movie, so you probably would have to see it to get the full effect. The commercial features beautiful scenes from Australia, and it actually makes me want to visit.
10. Budweiser
This commercial was very touching. The Budweiser commercial showed the production of beer being stopped, and instead the company starts to can water. They send the water to the areas that have had disasters lately like Houston, Florida, and Puerto Rico. The company’s commercials usually feature the famous Clydesdale horses and the sweet puppies.
9. Avocados From Mexico
In a perfect society made inside a dome, they seem to have forgot one thing: the chips. What are they going to use to dip in their guacamole now? The people inside the dome start to freak out, until they realize they still have avocado toast. Then, another freak out occurs because they realize that they don’t have wifi. It’s a very funny commercial that makes a dig at millenials and their love for avocados and the internet.
8. Ram (Commercial 1)
I feel sorry for all the Minnesota fans who had to watch this commercial. The Vikings are shown going across the ocean in their boat, with the truck being towed along behind it. Then on a road standing on their boat being towed by a Ram truck. They are on their way to Minneapolis for the Super Bowl. They are then shown turning around and heading back home. Smart move by Ram, it was way better than their other commercial.
7. M&M
The famous red M&M is played by no other than Danny DeVito. It starts out with him talking to the brown M&M saying how three people had already tried to eat him. He then finds a “lucky penny” and wishes he was a human. He magically transforms into his human self, and goes around asking civilians if they want to eat him. However, in an unexpected turn of events, he is hit by a garbage truck. A very random, and very funny commercial by M&M.
6. Sprint
I have to be honest, I was creeped out all throughout this commercial. Robots scare me, and Sprint’s commercial featured a lot of them. The robots start to mock and laugh at the human who is in charge of them, and it is all very weird. At the end, however, a small robot comes up to the human and says “you got a dumb face”. That was all it took for me to bust out into laughter, and the commercial instantly went to the top of my list.
5. E-Trade
In past years, E-Trade has been known for their commercials with talking babies. However, this year they went on a new route and incorporated old people. The joke was that they hadn’t saved up for retirement, so they were still having to work jobs at an old age. It was pretty hilarious, and props to the old people for being great at what they do.
4. Pringles
The Pringles commercial was funny in its own odd way. They stacked Pringles to create different flavor combinations. It had an element of quirkiness about it that really made me chuckle. It didn’t hurt that Bill Hader was in it, known for his hilarious characters on Saturday Night Live.
3. Amazon
One of the funniest commercials of the night had to be Amazon. The idea was that Alexa had lost her voice, so they had to get different celebrities to fill in for her. Alexa’s owner asked her to set the mood, expecting her to dim the lights, instead he received Rebel Wilson telling him a dirty story. Other replacements included Gordon Ramsey, Cardi B, and Anthony Hopkins. All of the replacements were hilarious in their own way, and even a little creepy (especially Anthony Hopkins).
2. Doritos and Mountain Dew
This commercial starts out with famous actor Peter Dinklage rapping to “Look at Me Now” by Chris Brown while eating the new Doritos Blaze. I was not expecting this to happen and was pleasantly caught off guard. The scene then transitions to Morgan Freeman drinking Mountain Dew Ice lip syncing to Missy Elliot’s “Get Ur Freak On”. This commercial was hilarious and that’s why it’s at the top of my list.
1. NFL
The best commercial of the night had to go to NFL. I mean how can you beat Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr. doing some Dirty Dancing. Eli Manning’s dance moves were horrendously funny. The Giants safety, Landon Collins, is also in the commercial grooving on the sideline and tells the coach to “Let them dance.” I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard at a commercial, NFL scored a touchdown with this one.
