Gator Baseball Hits the Beach

The baseball team packed their bags and headed up to Myrtle Beach for spring break, bats and gloves in tact.  The Gators drove about 10 hours to play 5 games in four day’s time.  While Greenwood only pulled out one win, they fought a hard fight against many challenging opponents.

The first game the team lost to Lawrence County(8-2), who reside in Louisa, Kentucky.  The second day the Gators battled Pleasure Ridge Park, a team from Louisville.  Greenwood took PRP in extra innings and lost by 1(8-7).  The close score was due in part to Tyler Cook’s excellent pitching.  The score was especially impressive considering the team they were battling is ranked tenth in the state.  Olive Hill, Kentucky’s West Carter team, pulled out a win in the third game against the Gators(12-1).  The fourth game against Bethlehem(Bardstown, Kentucky) was very close with a score of 12-10, Eagles.  At the final game the Gators pulled out a win against Middlesboro(10-8).

While there was a lot of baseball, the boys also got time to enjoy their spring break.  The team got to room with each other and had a lot of fun just spending time together.  When they weren’t on the field they were on the beach even with the windy air and cold water.  Baseball may have been the main sport they played but football was a close second.  “Spring break was a great time, change of scenery and playing different teams. We still had one goal, to win,” sophomore Chandler Wilson said.  This would have been his second break with the team.  Overall, it was a nice balance of work and play.

The team stayed at a hotel next door to another hotel where two teen girls spring break turned into tragedy.  At the beach front building, Camelot by The Sea, Daniela Flores and Amber Franco fell off of a 19th floor balcony and were found dead April 5th.  Both were high school students at Myrtle Beach High School.  On April 13th, another man was found dead at the same hotel.  However, investigators have been to led to believe it was an apparent jump.

When the Gators returned home there was not much time for recovery.  On April 10th, Greenwood came out with a victory against Butler County(4-3).

Over spring break the community suffered a tremendous loss.  Mason Goodnight, who was ten years old, passed away on April 6th.  Mason was an avid baseball player along with the many other sports.  He was a future Gator and his loss leaves a big hole in our hearts.  To honor him, the team put Goodnight’s number on the back of their helmets during the game Thursday night.  It doesn’t matter if you are a baseball fan or not, this team did something that everyone should admire.  So much respect goes to the guys.  This created a good memory for Mason’s family during a trying time.  Fly high #11, you will be missed.
