Radar the Weather Dog
Week of 4/25/2016
A Pet of the Week feature on Radar the Weather Dog is long overdue.
At over 10 years old, this Border Collie is the mascot of the local weather and news station WNKY, and has been voted Best Local TV Personality Bowling Green for 7 years! However, Radar hasn’t always been a legend.
When he was just a puppy, he certainly would never have dreamed that he would be a local celebrity, loved by all of Bowling Green. In fact, he probably didn’t even think he’d be loved by anyone. At less than 1 year old, the pup that would become Radar was one of thousands of animals that find themselves at the BGWC Humane Society each year. All he really wanted was a home where he would be taken care of and appreciated. But he got so much more.
When the crew of WNKY recognized his friendly personality and ability to act, they quickly adopted him in 2005. Ever since, he has kept very busy representing the station. Though he began as just a mascot to be featured in weather segments, his sunny persona opened up the doors to so much more. Now, Radar is the face of many of WNKY’s segments, such as the Community Events Calendar, Radar’s Birthday Club, and Radar’s World. Radar also makes sure to remember his roots, staying involved with the BGWCHS and appearing at events like the annual 5K walk or the local adoption drives. He always encourages his viewers to adopt from the Humane Society and to spay and neuter their animals.
When he’s off-camera, Radar likes to spend his time relaxing and hanging out with his friends, just like any other dog. He spends the weekdays at the WNKY station, where he has a special chair and lots of toys. At night, he is kept company by the nighttime crew. During the weekends, he stays at Alpha Pet Boarding.
Radar has had a long and successful career, and although it’s far from over yet, he is beginning to work with his new adopted friend, Soky, training her to one day take his place.
