Pet of the Week

January 9, 2015

The Pet of the Week section highlights one dog, cat, hamster, horse, chimera, etc. each week. Many are up for adoption at the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society, and some have extraordinary talents or have made significant impacts on the community. But most importantly of all; they’re all adorable!

We’d like to kick off our Pet of the Week section by honoring a legendary dog named Griff. This Great Pyrenees dog was found, abandoned, by Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society worker Elizabeth Cooper, with a total of eight bullet wounds throughout his body, as well as a broken leg. Cooper adopted him during his recovery, and eventually decided to make him a permanent addition to her family. In order to pay for Griff’s medical treatment, Cooper reached out to the Internet for support. Donors responded generously, raising enough money to not only pay for Griff’s treatment, but that of other dogs as well. Griff eventually passed away peacefully on December 29, having been in the Cooper household for almost seven months, but his legacy, the impact of his life on the lives of other dogs and humans, lives on.

Rachael

Week of 1/12/15

Rachel 1

Rachael is a brindle Shepherd and Cattle Dog mix who iRachel 2s currently at the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society, although she was originally staying at a high-kill shelter in Allen County. She is still somewhat wound up from the experience and can appear confrontational, but she really just wants to be let out of her cage so she can run around and play and meet people. Though she has a lot of energy, once she gets out and gets some exercise, she is an obedient and intelligent dog. Rachael is still searching for a home, but she loves people and has a wonderful personality, so she will surely find one soon.

(Check out, sponsor, or adopt Rachael on Petfinder here.)

*Good news! Rachael has been adopted and is settling into her new home! Congratulations, Rachael!*

Week of 1/19/15

Natasha is such a good dog!

She is a six-year-old Beagle at the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society, and she has a perfect temperament. With her easy going personality, even if she gets free from her leash or separated from her handler, she won’t run away, but will rather just wait calmly for them. In addition, she never barks or bites, and she is very tolerant, so she would be a great companion for children. She is also very manageable for the elderly because she is not extremely energetic, making her very low-maintenance. Not only does she love to go out on walks, but she also enjoys just sitting with her owners and taking in the scenery, so she would be the perfect companion for anyone’s front porch, backyard, or living room.

Natasha is just so good and so well behaved that she would be a wonderful, loving addition to any family!

Learn more about Natasha or contribute to her adoption at her Petfinder page here.

Yay! Natasha has been adopted and is already settling into her new forever home!

Ethel

Week of 1/26/15

Ethel's winning smile is sure to melt your heart.
Ethel’s winning smile is sure to melt your heart.

Ethel is a big dog with a big heart.

Although her breed, Polish Lowland Sheepdogs, are naturally medium-sized, Ethel is very overweight, weighing over 40 pounds. She doesn’t let this stop her, however, as she loves to run and play outside. She is very obedient, so she also enjoys just snuggling and being pet if her owner can’t keep up with her energy.

Ethel has a winning smile and a cheerful attitude that will brighten anyone’s day, and her adorably funny way of running is sure to draw a smile, but she has yet to find a home. She needs a family that can give her lots of exercise to burn off some of her weight and an environment that can contain her energetic spirit. As big as she may be, her heart is even bigger, so she would be the perfect addition to anyone’s couch!

Please consider sponsoring, adopting, or even just reading about Ethel at her Petfinder page here.

Great news! Ethel has been adopted and is now living happily with her new family!

Ceres is a 2-year-old Pit Bull who has recently become a mother.

Ceres, who belongs to Brittany Johnson, a senior here at Greenwood, gave birth to a litter of eight adorable puppies last Monday. The puppies are healthy and have all found future homes with friends and family of the Johnsons. Ceres, who has always been a very energetic dog, is now taking a much-needed rest so she can recover from the pregnancy, but hopefully she will be on her feet and ready to play again soon.

Best wishes to Ceres and her new litter of puppies!

Cooper

Week of 2/9/15

Cooper

Cooper loves nothing more in the world than a big, warm hug.

Mia is Cooper's best friend, and must be adopted along with Cooper. She is very calm and obedient and a great friend to any human.

Cooper is a Pit Bull mix, who is taking a temporary stay at the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society. He was surrendered to the Humane Society after his owner passed away this January, along with his best friend Mia. They are both older dogs, Cooper being 10 and Mia 11, which will make it more difficult for them to find a home, especially because they are a bonded pair and must go to the same home. But Cooper is incredibly sweet and gentle, and loves humans more than anything, preferring a big hug over a dish of food any day. If you have room in your home, and your heart, for this lovable pair, please consider adopting them today!

Brownie

Week of 2/16/15

2015-02-14 Brownie (2) (1280x719)

You can’t find a dog with more personality than Brownie!

Brownie is a beagle mix at the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society, who soaked up lots of love and attention at the Humane Society’s Valentine’s Day adoption drive this weekend. The drive was held at Pet Smart on Gary Farms Boulevard from February 13-15th, and it showcased over twenty dogs, as well as a huge array of cats, from the Humane Society. Brownie made an instant connection with almost everyone she met, drawing them in with her sweet personality and adorable face. She loves people, but she is a little shy at first and can get scared easily. However, once she gets to know people, she is super playful and affectionate.

Like a true dog, Brownie has a strong attachment to her special bone. The bone was given to her by a volunteer at the adoption drive, and her first action was to bury it under the pile of blankets in her crate and sit on the pile. She fought sleep and guarded the bone all night, until she finally gave in and took a nap, deciding to use my hands as a pillow when I reached in her cage to pet her. Once she was loaded into her cage to return to the Humane Society, I noticed her bone sitting in its cage all by itself, so I brought it out to her and she immediately smiled.

Brownie is a beautiful dog with an even more beautiful personality. We wish her the best of luck finding her new forever home!

Brownie is so tired from guarding her special bone that she falls asleep, using a Humane Society volunteer's hands as a pillow.

The Rich Family Kittens

Week of 2/23/15

The Rich family household is filled with the sound of pattering feet, but not human feet. Officer Rich, the Student Resource Officer here at Greenwood, and his wife are the proud adoptive parents of a full family of cats. Their three sweetest darlings are Buster, Harley, and Knick Knacks.

Buster joined the family after they rescued him from the Humane Society. He was the runt of his litter and no one wanted him, but Officer and Mrs. Rich saw that he was a sweet and wonderful personality, and they knew that he belonged in their family.

Harley was also rescued, after he was found by Mrs. Rich at her workplace. He had been abandoned and was starving, to the point where the family was afraid he wouldn’t live much longer. However, he has since grown to be an energetic, healthy cat of 20 lbs. His personality is laid back and friendly, and according to Officer Rich, Harley is what made him a cat person.

If you have any information on Knick Knacks's whereabouts, please contact Officer Rich through the Greenwood High School front office.

Knick Knacks, the third star of the family, is an orange Tabby who  Officer Rich came across as a kitten while responding to a complaint by a Warren County resident. The resident was Knick Knacks’ owner, who didn’t want to keep him anymore and had asked Officer Rich to bring Knick Knacks to the Humane Society. On the way to the shelter, however, Officer Rich bonded with the kitten and decided to adopt him. Knick Knacks settled in wonderfully into their household and became a deeply-loved member of the family. Last May, however, Knick Knacks disappeared from the Springfield subdivision in the Hidden River area. The family have not seen him since and are deeply worried. They hope that someone has found him and will eventually respond to their posters and return Knick Knacks.

If you have any information of Knick Knacks’ whereabouts, or if you would like to hear more about Buster or Harley, please contact Officer Rich through the front office or contact the Kentuckiana Lost & Found Pets Network.
