Goff Earns Appointment to Naval Academy

By Haley Grayson, News/Opinion

Greenwood senior Alex Goff recently received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. This is a great opportunity, with Congressman Brett Guthrie giving Alex one of his remaining spots. This is such a big deal because Congressman Guthrie only has five spots that can be under his name on their record. Out of those three remaining spots, Alex was chosen. This is even more special to Alex because Guthrie is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Getting this big of an accomplishment, his family was a huge supporter, along with the school. He said, “The support given from my family, friends, and my school is something I’m grateful for.” He is very proud to serve his country in such a good way. Alex said, “What sets this academy apart from all the others is that I will be spending weeks at a time in the United States Naval Fleet on internships. I will have a guaranteed job when I graduate and will have full military benefits by the age of 38.”

To gain admission to the United States Naval Academy, Alex had to go through a rigorous application process, including a personal letter, letter of recommendation, evaluation letter from principal, teacher, and supervisor, list of extracurricular activities noting a leadership position, official transcript, and official ACT score. The legislators sat down to discuss the most deserving members for the Service Academy Nomination, and then notified those who would be receiving appointments. Alex’s tuition to the Naval Academy is free, but he will be required to serve a minimum of five years in the Navy.

In Alex’s words, “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
