Purr, Play, Sip in this new cafe that has pawed into Louisville, Kentucky. Planned to open this summer, Purrfect Cat Cafe will be a combination of a coffee shop and adoption center.

Cat cafes weren’t developed that long ago. The original cat cafe opened in Taiwan in 1998. Named Cat Flower Garden, the purpose of its business was to act as a pet therapy center. Mainly organized for owners who couldn’t keep their animals in apartments but wanted to still interact with them.

The idea spread rapidly throughout Asian cities before entering Europe and North America, where the United States adopted it own first cat cafe, which opened in 2014. However, the model for the business had changed throughout its travel. In America, residents are allowed to keep pets more freely, so entrepreneurs sought relationships with overwhelmed animal shelters. Purrfect Day Cafe will become partners with the Kentucky Humane Society.

“We think this will help us find homes for an additional 500 cats a year. This could be huge,” Blair excitedly said.

Patton, the cafe creator, hopes to donate $5,000 to the shelter before its planned opening. His future hopes are to continue donating to the nonprofit as his business progresses.

“I want to make a social impact here,” Patton stated. “I’m results-driven, laser-focused on how many cats we can adopt and the impact on the Kentucky Humane Society. If (shelters) don’t have for-profit businesses that are huge supporters of theirs, they would not survive.”
