Golden Globes: Meryl Streep Talks Politics; “La La Land” Breaks Records

The Golden Globes are not only known for the talent that attends the annual awards show, but for the memorable speeches made as well. Meryl Streep took several stabs at our president-elect during her acceptance speech. After being awarded with Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement, Streep proceeded to speak about the immaturity displayed by our future president throughout the election.

More specifically, Streep addressed the reality that the many of the actors and actresses in Hollywood are foreigners, and the negative connotation the president-elect has put around foreign people is wrong. Senior Lindsey Greene said, “Meryl Streep can get up there and say whatever she wants, just as Trump did throughout his campaign.”  Trump spoke of Streep’s speech during an interview with the New York Times where he stated that he was not surprised to be attacked by “liberal movie people.”

Streep’s speech wasn’t the only thing to make headlines. The film “La La Land” took home seven Golden Globe awards beating the previous record of six Golden Globes . The praised film was awarded with best director, best motion picture, best original song, best original score, best performance by an actor in a motion picture, best performance by an actress in a motion picture, as well as best screenplay. Sophomore Tory Willis attended “La La Land” prior to the Golden Globes. “It was a magical movie,” said Willis. Overall “La La Land” received numerous reviews all of which praised the film.
