Is Cheating Getting Worse?

By Helena Ysasaga, Reporter

Over the years many students have been caught cheating, and to be quite honest nothing is being done about it. I’ve seen teachers watch students cheating and just look the other way like nothing ever happened. Obviously that is not how you should handle the situation. Cheating is act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage, especially in a game or examination. Cheating is literally just another word for plagiarism. Plagiarism is the practice of taking someone else’s work or ideas and passing them off as one’s own. So if you copied off someone else’s work you are taking someone else’s work and not giving them any credit, obviously.

The amount of cheating has definitely increased over the years. I’ve asked students from Greenwood High School, who would like to remain anonymous about how many times they have cheated during their lifespan. The answers to that question were: ”i’ve been cheating since the 8th grade.” “I’ve cheated all through my years in elementary.” “I cheat about almost everyday.” “I cheat mainly when I need the help.” “I’ve cheated so many times that I can’t keep track of the amount.” “I don’t remember, i don’t remember.”

Cheating has always been the easiest way out of people doing their work but the thing is it’s not only the person who is cheating wrong, but also the person who is allowing the other person to do it. They are helping that person do it. So that person is as guilty as the other person allowing it. But sometimes the person doesn’t know it too. They can be looki

ng the other way with their work all out in the open for anyway to see. So it depends whether or not the person is letting them or they don’t even know what is going in.

Not to help the school is making things more challenging for students. Like by giving the students more projects, more homework assignments, and more essays. So if the students don’t understand what the teachers are teaching they are very tempted to cheat. Also some students are afraid to ask questions because they are afraid of what some students might think about them or they are just scared by the teacher in general. Now I’m not saying it’s the schools fault because cheating is a self choice, but the school does play a big role in that part.

Not only can you cheat off of someone elses work with them but another way of cheating is getting the answers or document key off the internet. Most people just see this as another way of getting the answers. Like no, it’s just another form of cheating. You are plagiarizing someone else’s work. It’s not like you’re going to put on the bottom of your paper like “Copied off this person’s work online.” When you get assigned something you should that assignment on your own because you were so suppose to do it. You and your knowledge.

Cheating has really gotten worse over the years. It’s a literal crisis that can never be prevented. When teenagers go home and copy the work from an online source you can do nothing to prevent it from happening. In class a teacher cannot keep all eyes on every student at once to make sure no one is sharing answers or copying off someone else. No matter what anyone ever does, you cannot prevent anyone from cheating.
