Less than 2% of the world’s population is redhead. Scotland actually has more redheads than Ireland, with 13% of its population being redhead. The United States’ redhead population is about 6%, and there are quite a few redheads at Greenwood High School. Red hair is a very unique trait. It is a recessive gene. Most redheads have brown, hazel, or green eyes, but there are a very few, like me, who have a blue eyes. Blue eyes and red hair is the rarest combination in the world. Red hair never greys, it simply just turns to a silvery white when it’s time.

As fun as being a redhead is, there are a lot of negative things about having red hair. We burn very easily. We have to apply sunscreen constantly.  We also get jokes about not having a soul. This has been around for thousands of years when the Ancient Greeks thought redheads were vampires. Our fiery hair also gives us a rep of having a bad temper. I’ll admit that I can get mad easily, but a lot of people with red hair are very calm.

I do get burnt easily, but I don’t like using sunscreen.”

— Patrick Handley

The redheads at Greenwood are no different. Patrick Handley, a freshman, is very famous for not only his intelligence but his hair as well. You could say he fits the stereotype. “Yeah, I get angry really easily.” If you know Patrick, you know that he gets fired up about anything. However, Patrick isn’t a huge fan of sunscreen. “I do get burnt easily, but I don’t like sunscreen.” Surprisingly, Patrick is the one who makes all the jokes about having no soul.

Zelda Little, another freshman, had many similar answers to Patrick, except she actually does use sunscreen as she should. “I use sunscreen a lot, so I smell like the beach a lot. I still roast though.” Zelda’s friend, Michaela Anderson, remembered a story of Zelda getting burnt. They were at a Hot Rods baseball game, and it was raining and cloudy. Zelda didn’t think she’d get burnt, but she did.She also has a temper like Patrick., “ I have a temper, but that’s not from being a redhead.”
